What Not To Do When Building Your Golf Fitness Business

Why ‘What Not To Do’ Beats ‘How To’ Advice

As I read and review internet blogs on various business subjects, what I have been finding are messages from “experts” telling us “How To” do this and “How To” do that. As I think back throughout my many years of business experience I recall how difficult it can be at times to get people to ACTUALLY want to (or have the guts to) JUST DO IT!

In some cases, I found that people actually paid more attention to the things they were instructed NOT to do. There were times I would ask an employee what they would do in a specific situation and the answer would be: “I’m not really sure what to do for that but I can tell you what I’m NOT going to do”! And in other circumstances I might mention to a staff member what NOT to do and they would go ahead and try to do what they weren’t supposed to do, simply out of curiosity. Kind of like your young children having the urge to touch the stove top electric coils when they are on and have a beautiful hot red color that is attractive to them.

A Management Experiment That Changed How I Train Staff

These actions are enough to make any manager go crazy, but after a while I decided to explore these observations a little further. I would spend many weeks advising our folks on how to do things properly, then I would completely flip on my management style by only telling them what not to do… then I would quickly turn my back and walk away from them. What I found with most people I supervised is that If I wasn’t willing to give them an answer at that moment they would either spend a good amount of time asking their peers for help or they would finally come into my office asking me to clarify what I meant and can I give them information that would help them. Some might think that this would create an atmosphere where people become afraid to ask for help, but that’s not what happened in our business. All of a sudden staff members would gather around to share opinions on their current tasks, in lieu of gathering to talk about Monday night football or wedding plans. These same principles apply directly to how you approach how to build and grow your golf fitness client base – because getting clients requires the same kind of proactive, engaged thinking.
